Carmarthen win Welsh Cup

2007-05-06 00:00:00
Carmarthen Town FC won the Welsh Cup for the first time in their history after a 3-2 success against Afan Lido FC in Llanelli on Sunday.

UEFA bonus
The victory at Stebonheath Park also gives the west Wales side a place in the qualifying round of next season's UEFA Cup but Carmarthen had to work hard to overcome the Welsh League underdogs. When Mark Jones's outfit took a 3-1 lead early in the second half it looked all over for Lido but Ian Jones's second goal of the game with 14 minutes remaining meant that Carmarthen - beaten on the same ground in the final two years ago by The New Saints FC - had to endure a nervy finish before they could hold the trophy aloft.

Kaid double
The Welsh Premier League outfit had taken an early lead through Kaid Mohamed, who also scored Carmarthen's third goal with a fine individual effort, but that was quickly cancelled out as Jones found the net following a short free-kick. Sacha Walters restored Carmarthen's advantage although their opponents never gave up and came close when Liam McCreesh struck the bar before they went 3-1 down.
