Spurs walk over Arsenal and into final

2008-01-22 00:00:00
Tottenham Hotspur FC reached the English League Cup final in the sweetest possible style on Tuesday night, beating north London rivals Arsenal FC 5-1 at White Hart Lane.

Millennium first
Strikes from Jermaine Jenas, a Nicklas Bendtner own goal, Robbie Keane, Aaron Lennon and Steed Malbranque earned a 6-2 aggregate triumph for Juande Ramos's men in the semi-final. Remarkably, it was Tottenham's first win against Arsenal this century, ending a barren run stretching back to November 1999.

Force with Tottenham
Their breakthrough came on three minutes. Jenas, via an exchange of touches between the England midfielder, Dimitar Berbatov and Keane, moved from the middle of the pitch to the limit of the Arsenal area before dragging a low shot in off the post. The goalscorer then turned provider. His free-kick from the Tottenham left was headed beyond visiting keeper Łukasz Fabiański by Arsenal forward Bendtner, who got the touch ahead of Michael Dawson.

On the break
As Arsenal chased the game, Keane struck on the break soon after half-time, bouncing a shot past Fabiański. Keane then played in Lennon who, from a slight angle, slotted past the keeper for No4 on 59 minutes. Emmanuel Adebayor reduced the deficit with a fine strike from the edge of the box. Jermain Defoe might have made it 5-1 before Malbranque did in stoppage time – sweeping home Jenas's low cross from close range. Tottenham will play either Chelsea FC or Everton FC in the Wembley final on 24 February.
