Bremen seal second as Nürnberg slump

2008-05-17 00:00:00
Werder Bremen clinched second place on the final day of the Bundesliga season and 1. FC Nürnberg were relegated, while champions FC Bayern München gave Oliver Kahn a winning send-off by beating Hertha BSC Berlin 4-1.

Fitting farewell
Bayern had already wrapped up their 21st league title, making the final day all about giving a fitting farewell to goalkeeper Kahn, who is retiring at the age of 38, and departing coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. They did it thanks to a hat-trick from Luca Toni – giving him a league-leading 24 goals in his debut season in Germany – and one goal from Franck Ribéry, two of Bayern's leading performers this season.

European places
Werder finished second with a 1-0 win at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Markus Rosenberg scoring ten minutes from time. Schalke, who confirmed Nürnberg's relegation by beating them 2-0 with both goals from defender Marcelo Bordon, had to settle for third and a place in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. Hamburger SV, 7-0 winners at home to Karlsruher SC, and VfL Wolfsburg – who beat Borussia Dortmund 4-2 – qualify for the UEFA Cup after finishing fourth and fifth.

Last-day wins
Elsewhere there were last-day wins for FC Hansa Rostock, who had already been relegated and triumphed at VfL Bochum 1848, and Hannover 96, who defeated FC Energie Cottbus 4-0. Eintracht Frankfurt ended their campaign with a 4-2 victory against the side who finished bottom of the table, MSV Duisburg with Martin Fenin striking twice. Deposed champions VfB Stuttgart shared four goals with DSC Arminia Bielefeld who retained their top-flight status.
